Rojales

Rojales consists of its own small centre and the Ciudad Quesada region.  Rojales is typically Spanish in design with many artesian houses and shops.  It has a lovely bridge called The Carlos III Bridge, with an old 16th century dam and waterwheel, surrounded by some play parks for children.  This is a great area for a walk or to cycle as it is predominantly flat.  There are sometimes outdoor events here planned by the town hall in summer. 

 

Markets

 

Every Thursday there is a local market in Rojales, between the centre of the village and the La Marquesa area in Ciudad Quesada.  It is a small market with a lot of local produce.  A larger market which we definitely recommend is Zocco market.  This is just a 5 minute drive from Rojales and is open on Sundays from 8am, it typically takes around 30 minutes to an hour to walk around and offers everything from fresh fruit and veg, cooked food, clothes, shoes, home furnishings and much more.  There are a few cafes, so you can take a break and have that much needed coffee or breakfast.  It can get busy, especially at the peak of summer, so we would recommend going early in the morning, around 9 or10am or later about 1pm.  It’s a great way to spend, the often quiet, Sunday mornings and it provides a good opportunity to start practicing a few Spanish phrases, however there are plenty of English-speaking people around.

 

Cave Houses

The Cuevas del Rodeo also known as the cave houses are situated just a 5 minute walk from the centre of Rojales.  They are lovely to visit and have great views with a small park and picnic benches outside.  During summer there are some live bands and musicians that play on a Sunday afternoon.  There are 17 caves and these are only open on the first Sunday of every month where artists exhibit their work.  Tourists are welcome and able to buy these items exhibited.  It can be a steep walk but the caves can also be accessed by car via Calle Opalo. 

 

 

For those who like to visit Museums, Rojales has a small museum called Museo de la Huerta, which is free and well maintained.  It show cases many items and paintings from the rural life and ancient times of Rojales.  There is also a local theatre and municipal sports centre.  For those that like to go to the night clubs or discos there are a couple to be found in the Los Palacio area of Rojales.  Overall Rojales is a small and traditional rural village with artesian houses and bread shops and butchers.  It is developing and has a good balance between culture and modern facilities as well as age range.
